My presentation is based upon the pedagogical use of the Gothic short story The monkey’s paw by WW Jacobs in the EOI classroom and its intertextual potential. Both the texts and audiovisual materials used in the lesson plan will all be in English. The structure of this particular story contains many elements from traditional fairy tales as well as several references to other literary texts. Taking into consideration the interest shown by students in horror and intrigue, we intend to enhance motivation by doing an interactive reading through intertextual references to texts with the same topic and audiovisual versions of the story. This interdisciplinary approach of interpreting literary texts and its discussion promotes extensive reading and encourages learning and reading strategies.
