Can you listen? The use of inferences in listening to authentic material
Duración: 50 minutos|
Making inferences is a very useful strategy in FL learning. From a theoretical point of view, the field of pragmatics distinguishes three types of inferences: entailment, presupposition and implicature. Now, how useful is this is our classrooms? Can our students make use of such inferences in order to improve their listening comprehension? A research was carried out in order to answer the question. Our research was carried out in two Intermediate 1 groups in one of our schools in the region of Madrid. A series of listening activities were used along the course; their objective was to assess whether our learners could use these inferences by listening to excerpts from English-speaking films. The presentation will explain all the relevant details of our experiment, as well as the main conclusions.
